The following pictures below were NOT installed by us but are some horrors of bad workmanship we have come across on call outs and conducting Periodic Inspections & Testing hence the importance of having mantenance contracts and regular Inspections and Tests carried out. Pictures were taken as we found it.
Here is a fused cutout installed to a lampost with exposed live parts and single insulated wires. The exposed metal parts will corrode and cause many problems in the future, there is also an electric shock risk.

Here we have a mess of wires and steel wired armored cables which are not glanded into the fuse board. As you can see the armoring does not have glands installed and they have cut away the steel wire armor. The steel wire should be earthed and in some cases can be used as a dedicated earth for the cable.
Below we have a burnt out part of a switch fuse which has melted its casing and damaged the cable, this could be due to incorrect fuse and fuse holder, loose connections or overloading. This was found on a call out to a cafe after reports of having no power. They had to close while the repairs were beeing carried out and they lost a lot of trade. This could have been prevented if they had regular inspections.
Below is a metled part of an isolator switch caused by a loose connection at the same cafe as above.
Here we found this mess in a mains cupboard of a restaurant. Due to the state of this we refused to work on it untill it was rectified. We beleive it is still in this state today. There are too many dangerous problems to list.
We found this burnt part of a mains distribution panel in a factory while carring out Testing & Inspections. If we had not Inspected this no one would know it was there untill it was too late.
As you can see from the pictures above it IS important to have Periodic Electrical Inspections and Testing carried out. Just because it works does not mean it is safe.
Dangerous electrics cause 10 deaths, 750 serious injuries and over 12,500 fires every year.
Always make sure that your electrics are regularly checked, maintained and kept in a safe condition by an authorised electrician.
